    Eligibility to appear in NEET (UG) – 2025

    The eligibility criteria for appearing in NEET (UG), as per the relevant regulations of the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Dental Council of India (DCI), are as follows:

    • The candidate must have turned 17 years old by the time of admission or will complete this age on or before 31 December of the year they are admitted to the first year of the Undergraduate Medical Course. The minimum age limit is therefore as follows:
    For Candidates of General (UR)/General-EWSborn on or before 31.12.2008
    For Candidates of SC/ST/OBC- NCL/PwBD/PwD Categoryborn on or before 31.12.2008
    • Upper age limit: According to the letter U-11022/2/2022-UGMEB, dated 9 March 2022, from the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Undergraduate Medical Education Board (UGMEB), there is no upper age limit for candidates.
    • \Indian Citizens and Overseas Citizens of India (OCI) who wish to pursue Undergraduate Medical Courses at a foreign Medical/Dental Institute must also qualify for NEET (UG).

    Criteria for NRI / OCI / Foreign Nationals

    • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), and Foreign Nationals are eligible for admission to Medical/Dental Colleges as per the rules and regulations set by the respective State Governments, Institutions, and the Government of India, where applicable. NRIs and OCI candidates must upload a Certificate from the relevant Indian Diplomatic Mission in their country of residence to substantiate their claim, along with the NEET (UG) 2025 online Application Form, and keep the original document for Counseling/Admission. Similarly, foreign applicants must upload Documentary Proof (e.g., relevant passport pages or a Certificate from the Competent Authority in their country) verifying their citizenship status with the online Application Form. The Embassy Certificate and Citizenship Certificate formats, or other valid proofs, are provided in Appendix XII and Appendix XIII. Foreign nationals are advised to confirm their eligibility with the concerned Medical/Dental College or State.
    • Eligibility of OCI cardholders for NEET (UG):
      • Indian Nationals, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), Persons of Indian Origin (PIO), and Foreign Nationals are eligible for admission to Medical, Dental, Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, and Homeopathy Colleges, subject to the rules and regulations set by the respective State Governments, Institutions, and the Government of India, as applicable.
      • In accordance with the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s Order dated 03.02.2023 in WP No. 891 of 2021, OCI candidates will continue to enjoy the rights and privileges that were granted to them before the notification issued on 04.03.2021.

    Participation of UT of J&K and Ladakh in All India Quota

    Students from the Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are eligible for 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats, and candidates from these UTs can participate in the admission process just like applicants from other states.

    Candidates must refer to the following table for the qualifying examination criteria to determine their eligibility for NEET (UG)2025.

    CODE: 01Candidates appearing for the qualifying examination (Class 12) in 2025, whose results are awaited, may apply and take the NEET (UG) – 2025 exam. However, they will only be eligible for admission to Undergraduate Medical Courses if they pass the qualifying examination with the required percentage before the first round of counselling.
    Applicants who have appeared or are appearing for the qualifying examination with English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as their main subjects and expect to meet the required percentage of marks are also eligible to apply and take the entrance test. However, their eligibility will be considered only if they submit documentary proof confirming that they have successfully passed the qualifying examination with the mandatory subjects and minimum required marks.

    CODE: 02The Higher/Senior Secondary Examination or the Indian School Certificate Examination, equivalent to Class 12, should be completed after 12 years of study. The last two years must include Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology (with practical tests in these subjects), along with Mathematics or another elective subject, and English at a level not lower than the core English course prescribed by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) under the 10+2+3 education system recommended by the National Committee on Education.
    Candidates who have completed Class 12 through Open Schooling or as private candidates are not eligible to appear for the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG). Additionally, Biology/Biotechnology studied as an additional subject at the Class 12 level will also not be considered valid for eligibility.* Candidates who have completed Class 12 with Biology as an additional subject are eligible to apply for the MBBS Entrance Examination, as per the Hon’ble High Court Order No. 2341/-W/DHC/WRIT/D-1/2019, dated September 24, 2019, in Writ Petition (C) No. 6773/2019.
    (Note: The above provision has been legally contested before the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi, the Hon’ble High Court of Allahabad (Lucknow Bench), and the Hon’ble High Court of Madhya Pradesh at Jabalpur. The regulations disqualifying candidates from recognized Open School Boards and those who studied Biology/Biotechnology as an additional subject have been overturned by these courts. However, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has filed Special Leave Petitions before the Hon’ble Supreme Court and Appeals in the respective High Courts. Therefore, candidates who have completed Class 12 from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), State Open Schools, or as private candidates from recognized State Boards, or have studied Biology/Biotechnology as an additional subject, will be allowed to appear for NEET (UG) – 2025, but their eligibility remains subject to the final decision of the Supreme Court and High Court appeals.)
    If an institute needs to assess the equivalency of an examination conducted by an Indian or foreign university to Class 12 under the Intermediate Science Examination, the candidate must provide a certificate from the concerned Indian University or the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) confirming the equivalence of the examination to Class 12 under the Intermediate Science Examination.

    CODE: 03The Intermediate or Pre-Degree Examination in Science conducted by an Indian University, Board, or any other recognized examining authority must include Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology (with practical assessments in these subjects) along with English as a mandatory subject.

    CODE: 04The Pre-Professional or Pre-Medical Examination must be taken after successfully completing the Higher Secondary Examination, Pre-University Examination, or an equivalent qualification.     NOTE

    Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no exams were held for the 2021 batch of Class 10 students under the Tamil Nadu State Board. As a result, no marks were recorded on the marksheet, and “pass” was marked in all subjects with a disclaimer: “As per G.O. (Ms) No. 48, School Education (G.E.) department dated: 25.02.2021, all candidates who studied SSLC in the academic year 2020-21 are declared passed.” When filling out the online application for NEET (UG) – 2025, if a candidate selects the passing year as 2021 and the school board as Tamil Nadu State Board of School Examination (Sec.), the Result Mode field will be disabled, and the related fields for Marks/CGPA will not be visible for those who passed Class 10 in 2021.

    • To be eligible for NEET (UG) – 2025, candidates must have individually passed Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English, and obtained a minimum of 50% marks combined in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology in the qualifying examination, as per the NMC and DCI Regulations. Additionally, they must have a rank in the merit list of NEET (UG) – 2025 for admission to Undergraduate Medical Courses.
    • For candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, or Other Backward Classes (NCL), the minimum required marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology combined in the qualifying examination will be 40% instead of 50% for Unreserved and General-EWS candidates. Similarly, for PwBD/PwD candidates, as per NMC and DCI Regulations, the minimum required marks in the qualifying examination for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (or Botany & Zoology)/Biotechnology combined will be 40% instead of 50%.
    • Additionally, students who have received their education abroad and wish to pursue admission into medical colleges in India must have passed Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English in Class 12 with at least 50% marks. Their qualifications must be recognized as equivalent by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) in accordance with the regulations of the National Medical Commission and the respective University.
    • The minimum qualifying marks required for eligibility to MBBS courses will also apply to relevant Institutions of National Importance (INIs) such as AIIMS and JIPMER.

    NOTE

    • In all other instances, states or institutes with different eligibility cut-offs may follow their own criteria.
    • The Pre-medical course may be held either at a Medical College or a Science College.
    • Mathematics marks are not considered for eligibility in Undergraduate Medical Courses.
    • Candidates from Foreign/International Boards must verify that their qualifying examination meets the scope and standards specified in CODE: 07.
    • Any interpretation regarding the requirement for Biology/Biological Sciences as part of the qualifying examination for NEET (UG) will be governed by Regulation No. 4 (1) of the Graduate Medical Education Regulations (1997), as amended in 2018, and the Supreme Court ruling on 16th February 2021 in Civil Appeal No. 390 of 2021, in the case of “Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences vs. Srikeerti Reddi Pingle & Ors.” (Para 20 & 21).
